London has a big Chinese community so the earliest appointment I could get was yesterday, they asked me lots of questions and wouldn't let me apply for a tourist visa insisting that I had to apply for a business visa, I explained that it was an amateur competition and there would be no payment made to me or to any of the officials but they wouldn't have it. I won't know the outcome until Wednesday. Fingers crossed

Well ti reassure you slightly Pete, I applied for a tourist visa (although they asked me almost no questions) when I got my visa back it was a type F, which is apparently a business visa.

I went to the visa office today and was also told that since I didn't have a hotel booking, I could not apply for tourist visa. The lady changed it to a business visa and told me I could pick it up on Friday.
Fingers crossed.

It seems they also changed mine, I put in "L" (Tourist) in the application, but now I check I see that I got a category "M" in my passport, which is ""Commerce & Trade" according to the list.
